Two writers from British Columbia and one from Nova Scotia have been shortlisted for the $10,000 Danuta Gleed Literary Award for their debut collections of short stories.

The Writers' Union of Canada announced the finalists on Monday for its annual prize celebrating a Canadian writer's first collection of short fiction published the previous year.

Victoria writer Deborah Willis made the cut for Vanishing and Other Stories (Penguin Canada), a collection of 14 stories about fractured love. The work was shortlisted for the 2009 Governor General's Award.

Sarah Roberts of Gibsons, B.C., was shortlisted for Wax Boats (Caitlin Press), her tales about a fictional B.C. island community. The collection includes the story of a Boy Scout troop that rescues its leader and an expectant mother who turns to native traditions to guide her through a safe delivery.

Halifax writer Joey Comeau was nominated for Overqualified (ECW Press), his collection of stories crafted by stringing together real job application letters. Maclean's magazine described it as "sweetly written, bitter and bitterly funny … one of the season's most remarkable books."

The winner will be announced on June 5 at the Writers' Union of Canada's annual general meeting in Ottawa.

The second- and third-prize winners will each receive $500.

The late Danuta Gleed's first collection of stories, One of the Chosen, was posthumously published by BuschekBooks in 1997. Royalties from sales of the book go to fund the award.
