British publishing house Faber & Faber said it's setting up its first creative writing school in Canada.

The Faber Academy Toronto is set to open its doors in October, according to a report in the Globe and Mail.

It will offer long and short fiction and poetry courses, employing well-known, acclaimed Canadian authors including Miriam Toews, who is published by Faber in the U.K.

Academy head Patrick Keogh says the Flying Troutman's author will be involved in a "major way."

Keogh points to Toronto's active writing community as key to its attraction for Faber, praising its "curious creative energy."

"There is something very organic about the way a literary culture has come together," he told the Globe. "There's an interesting community of writers and an interested group of people who have aspirations to be writers."

The Faber Academy was created 18 months ago in Paris and has since expanded to include courses in London, Geneva and Dublin and later this year, it will sprout in Glasgow and Edinburgh, too.

Literary luminaries that have taught at the academy include Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney, Anne Enright, Paul Auster and Kazuo Ishiguro.

Prices will range from $820 to $5,700 but details are still sketchy for the Canadian courses.

Keogh has said he's met with Canadian writers including Margaret Atwood, Michael Redhill, Madeleine Thien and Andrew Pyper.

Depending on what happens, it may expand to Montreal and Vancouver.
