Peter C. Newman's biography of Izzy Asper and Reinhold Kramer's new work on Canadian novelist Mordecai Richler are among the winners of the Canadian Jewish Book Awards for works published in 2008.
Newman's Izzy: the Passionate Life and Turbulent Times of Izzy Asper (Harper Collins Canada), a look at the late Canadian media mogul and founder of CanWest Global Communications Corp., took the prize in the biography and memoir category.
Kramer's Mordecai Richler: Leaving St. Urbain (McGill-Queen's University Press) received the award for scholarship on a Jewish subject. The Brandon University professor's work is based on never-before published material from the Richler archives and was one of CBC.ca's top 100 pop culture mementoes of 2008.
Canadian crime fiction writer Howard Engel was given a lifetime achievement award for his long, distinguished writing career. Engel is best known for his 12-book mystery series featuring Jewish detective Benny Cooperman.
The awards will be presented May 25 at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre in Toronto.
