Derek Weiler, literary critic and editor-in-chief of Canadian book industry magazine Quill & Quire, died at his home in Toronto on Sunday.

News of the 40-year-old editor's passing was announced on the Quill & Quire website Monday.

"The family is currently making arrangements and is requesting privacy," the staff said on the website.

Weiler had reportedly battled health problems for some time. The cause of death was not announced.

A graduate of the University of Waterloo and Centennial College in Toronto, Weiler wrote about and reviewed books for a raft of Canadian publications, including the Globe and Mail, National Post and Toronto Star newspapers, as well as magazines such as Chatelaine.

Over the years, he rose through the ranks at Quill & Quire, from staff writer in 1999 to the editor-in-chief post in 2004.

Weiler is survived by his wife, Sari Morrison, as well as his parents, Gerald and Marie Weiler, his sister, Marcy Hespeler, and her family.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at the Henry Walser Funeral Home in Kitchener, Ont., according to The Canadian Press.
