N.S., Toronto poets win League of Canadian Poets honours

Poets from Antigonish, N.S., and Toronto won awards from the League of Canadian Poets this weekend.
Antigonish writer Anne Simpson won the $1,000 Pat Lowther Memorial Award on Saturday for her latest collection, Quick. The award celebrates the best book of poetry by a Canadian woman published in the preceding year.
The jury described the collection, Simpson's third, as "poems of extraordinary range, intelligence and empathy."
The $1,000 Gerald Lampert Memorial Award, which recognizes the best first book of poetry published by a Canadian during the past year, went to Toronto's Alex Boyd for Making Bones Walk.
Boyd's debut "shows a fine mastery of craft, but it is his attention to detail, the little things in life that reveal the bigger story that really got me.… These are poems rich with innovative language and Boyd's very original way of looking at the world," read the judges' citation.
Organizers announced this year's winners at the league's festival and conference in St. John's, N.L.
Created in 1966, the league is a non-profit organization that champions the teaching, reading and publication of Canadian poetry.
