Filmmaker Atom Egoyan plans a tribute to the late David Pecaut (shown). (Luminato)A new work by Canadian installation artists Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller will be erected in Trinity Bellwoods Park during the Luminato arts and culture festival this June.
It is one of four visual arts installations announced by the Luminato festival on Monday.
Cardiff and Miller, known for their audio art and large-scale installations, will bring a new installation, Ship O' Fools, commissioned by the festival.
It is a salvaged Chinese junk, a nine-metre ship that art-lovers can walk through. The images inside, and the audio experience, draw on the themes of East meeting West that are at the core of this year's Luminato.
Cardiff, born in Brussels, Ont., and Miller, born in Vegreville, Alta., are partners in art and life and currently based in Berlin and Grindrod, B.C.
Another work, being created by film and stage director Atom Egoyan, is inspired by letters from late Luminato co-founder David Pecaut.
Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids) Light Air is being created as a tribute to Pecaut, a Toronto businessman and philanthropist who died last December.
The tribute is to feature Solar Breath (Northern Caryatids), an experimental film that shows a curtain billowing in the wind by veteran Canadian artist Michael Snow, and Light Air by emerging artist and composer Mani Mazinani.
Also announced for the Luminato festival June 11-20:
- Wish Come True Festival: A family-friendly event will be held at Queen's Park featuring huge, colourful inflatables and bounce houses from Miami-based FriendsWithYou.
- Mark Fast: Canadian-born fashion designer will create a huge knitted sculpture to wind through Brookfield Place.
