A Claude Monet painting stolen in 2000 from a museum in western Poland has been recovered, according to police in the Polish city of Olkusz.

Police say they have arrested a 41-year-old man in connection with the theft.

The painting Beach in Pourville had been cut from its frame and replaced with a copy painted on cardboard in the theft 10 years ago.

Police say they had fingerprints and other evidence at the site that identified a suspect, but have not been able to locate him until recently.

Prosecutors said a man has confessed to stealing the painting, but gave no further details.

The impressionist painting of the sea lapping against a beach, created in blue and green pastel tones, is said to have been valued at more than $1 million US at the time of the theft.

The painting recovered by police is being assessed by the National Museum in Poznan to determine if it is the stolen work.
