A private collection of paintings valued at a million euros ($1.5 million Cdn), including canvases by Pablo Picasso and Henri Rousseau, has been stolen from a villa in the south of France.

Police in Toulon said Saturday that the theft was discovered Dec. 31 by the villa's caretaker.

The French owner of the villa was on holiday in Sweden at the time of the theft, estimated to have taken place Wednesday or Thursday.

Police say the owner has returned to take stock of the loss.

Meanwhile, a Modigliani initially believed to be part of the haul has since been found.

The villa heist was the second major theft of artwork in the region around the end of the year. A piece by Edgar Degas was recently stolen from a museum in Marseille.

Les Choristes (The Chorus) has been valued at 800,000 euros ($1.2 million Cdn).

Police in Marseille said Friday that they had detained the night security guard in connection with the Degas theft. But there are reports they have since let him go.
