Toronto condo, B.C. Olympic oval win architecture awards

Prince George Airport won the award for innovation in architecture. (McFarlane | Green | Biggar Architecture + Design Inc.)A luxury condo in Toronto, the Prince George Airport and the Olympic Oval in Richmond, B.C., are among the winners of the 2009 Awards of Excellence from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
The awards are given every two years for achievement in design.
The winners of the innovation in architecture awards are:
- 130 Bloor Street West, by Quadrangle Architects of Toronto, a luxury condo in downtown Toronto.
- Prince George Airport, by McFarlane | Green | Biggar Architecture + Design Inc. of Vancouver, an expansion of the municipal airport to accommodate more traffic.
- Richmond Olympic Oval, by Cannon Design of Vancouver, the speed skating oval for the 2010 Olympics.
Honourable mentions went to:
- Bluepoint Louver Facade System, a building system in Thailand with an innovative system to shade windows by Paul Raff Studio of Toronto.
- Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, Toronto's new performing arts centre for opera and ballet by Diamond and Schmitt Architects of Toronto.
Raff also won the award for Allied Arts for his designs for walls, windows and landscapes.
Busby Perkins + Will Architects of Vancouver won a Green Architecture Award for Dockside Green, a Victoria, B.C. redevelopment that involves residential, commercial and other buildings.
Saucier + Perrotte of Montreal was named architects of the year for its design work all over the world including the Communication, Culture and Technology Building at the Mississauga campus of University of Toronto.
The firm, begun in 1988 by Gilles Saucier and André Perrotte, has won five Governor General's Medals in Architecture and an International Architecture Award.
