A musical version of the classic film A Christmas Story is headed to Broadway.
Producers said Thursday that Christmas Story, The Musical! will play the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in New York from Nov. 5 to Dec. 30, just ahead of the holiday season.
They have put out a casting call for a boy aged 8-10 to play Ralphie, the young hero whose dearest Christmas wish is a Red Ryder BB Gun.
The 1983 movie, which makes the most of the winsome charms of 1940s Indiana, is a holiday favourite. Peter Billingsley, the original movie Ralphie, is a co-producer of the musical.
The musical version has met a receptive audience on its national tour in the 2011 with Variety calling it "a slick, undeniably enjoyable musical."
Lyricist Benj Pasek and composer Justin Paul have written songs with titles including Red Ryder Carbine Action BB Gun, Ralphie to the Rescue and A Major Award. It will be Pasek and Paul's Broadway debut.
