District Profile:

A border riding in northwest New Brunswick, it forms the "nose" of New Brunswick, tucked between New Brunswick and Maine. It includes Baker-Brook, Clair, Lac Baker, Saint-François- de-Madawaska, Saint-Jacques, St-Hilaire, Verret villages, parish of Madawaska, excluding city of Edmundston. The total population is 12,615.

Redistribution:

The 2006 redistribution adds the parish of Sainte-Basile from the electoral district of Madawaska-la-Vallee. In the 1995 redistribution, this district kept all the existing riding except for about 400 voters (one poll and part of another), which moved to Edmundston. It gained from Madawaska Centre - the eastern half of the old riding - part of St Joseph Parish (five polls, about 1,200 voters).

Political History:

2003:	PC JEANNOT VOLPÉ won the seat with 3,965 votes. June 27, 2003: Sworn in as minister of finance.
1999:	VOLPÉ defeated LIB GEORGES CORRIVEAU by 2,151 votes. June 1: VOLPÉ appointed minister of natural resources and energy. No change in October 2001 cabinet shuffle.
1995:	VOLPÉ defeated CORRIVEAU by 975 votes.
1991:	CORRIVEAU defeated PC RAOUL CYR by 695 votes. Jan. 25, 1994: CORRIVEAU appointed minister of state for Electronic Information Highway.
1987:	CORRIVEAU defeated PC JEAN-PIERRE OUELLET by 1,906 votes.
1982:	OUELLET defeated LIB LUC DAIGLE by 526 votes. Oct. 30: OUELLET appointed minister of cultural and historical resources. Oct. 3, 1985: Minister of education.
1978:	OUELLET defeated LIB NELSON BELLEFLEUR by 805 votes. OUELLET reappointed minister of youth, recreation and cultural resources.
1974:	OUELLET defeated LIB LAURIER LEVESQUE by 95 votes. (LEVESQUE was elected in 1970, 1967, 1963, 1960). Dec. 3, 1974: OUELLET appointed minister of youth; 1976: Appointed minister of youth, recreation and cultural resources.
