Pension Question
CBC Online News | Updated Aug. 18, 2006
There's more at stake in this election than just winning or losing. The fall vote could make a big difference to the financial futures of 20 New Brunswick MLAs.
- Seventeen Tory MLAs, and three Liberals are less than one year away from qualifying for a pension.
- New Brunswick MLAs must sit in legislative sessions in eight consecutive years to qualify for their pension.
- If these 20 MLAs lose their riding in the vote, they will fail to qualify for a pension paycheque starting at age 55.
- The pension is 4.5 per cent of the average salary of an MLAs three best years, multiplied by the number of sessions, with a minimum of eight sessions required.
Currently the session average would be about $41,600. That makes a basic, eight-session pension worth $14,976 a year. It's indexed to inflation and payable in full at age 60. Between 55 and 60 retired MLAs can begin collecting 44.44 per cent of their pension, or $6,655.
Cabinet ministers get paid more. Premier Bernard Lord, for example, would be entitled to an additional $13,370 if he loses his seat this year for a total of $28,346 plus inflation, but not until he turns 60. He can begin collecting $15,613 (plus inflation) when he reaches 55.
