Profile:
This is an Acadian coastal riding in the Northeast corner of
the province.
In 1995 census, 97% listed French as mother tongue.
Fishing is the major industry.
Riding consists of that part in county of Gloucester contained in: parish
of Shippagan; town of Shippagan; town of Lamèque; villages of Le
Goulet and Sainte-Marie/Saint Raphaël, Petit-Laméque.
Redistribution:
In 1995 redistribution, riding was created from: all of Shippagan-les-Iles
except for the southern tip which moves to NE corner of Centre-Péninsule
- Inkerman and Evangéline polls.
Political History: SHIPPAGAN-LES-ILES - new in 1974
Gloucester, a multi-member seat, had been Lib since 1935 except for
one PC elected in by-election in 1972.
LIB ANDRÉ ROBICHAUD was first elected in Gloucester in 1970.
In 1974, LIB ANDRÉ ROBICHAUD defeated PC JEAN CHIASSON by 67
votes.
In 1978, PC JEAN GAUVIN defeated LIB ROBICHAUD by 547 votes.
GAUVIN appointed Minister of Fisheries, Nov 21/78-1985.
In 1982, PC GAUVIN again defeated LIB ROBICHAUD, this time by 1,751
votes.
Gauvin reappointed Minister of Fisheries until 1985; apptd Min of Housing,
Oct 3/85.
In 1987, LIB ALDÉA LANDRY defeated PC GAUVIN by 1,608 votes.
LANDRY appointed President of Executive Council and Min resp for Regional
Dev, Oct 27/87; Interim Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Oct 27/88;
added Min of Intergovernmental Affairs, Nov 30/89.
In 1991, PC JEAN GAUVIN ran again and defeated LIB LANDRY by 50 votes.
In Dec 1994, then PC leader Dennis Cochrane removed Gauvin as Whip
after Gauvin had threatened to quit the party unless Cochrane refused
to consider former COR members as future Tory candidates.
