Profile:
Kennebecasis is considered to be a bedroom community of Saint John.

The riding includes the town of Quispamsis, the village of Gondola Point and Rothesay and Hampton parishes.

Redistribution:
The riding was created in the 1995 redistribution from approximately 10,250 voters from Kings West in the northern part of riding, and from the area east of the Kennebecasis River.

Political History:

  • Kings had been 3-member seat

  • 3 Libs - 1935; 3 Cons - 1939, 1944, 1948;

  • 3 PCs - 1952, 1956, 1960, 1962 by-el, 1963, 1967, 1970

  • KINGS WEST - New in 1974

  • PC JACK BAXTER was elected in Kings in Dec 3/62, 1963, 1967, 1970 and in Kings West in 1974, 1978, 1982.

  • BAXTER appointed Minister of Justice, Nov 12/70-1974.

  • In 1982, PC BAXTER defeated LIB MALCOLM BARRY by 2,007 votes. ND GEORGE LITTLE, Leader of NB NDP, who was third, got 25% of the vote.

  • BAXTER appointed Minister of Finance and Housing and Min resp for Housing Policy, Oct 30/82; Min of Finance, 1985.

  • In 1987, LIB LAUREEN JARRETT defeated ND GEORGE LITTLE by 2,320 votes.

  • JARRETT appointed Minister of Income Assistance, Oct 27/87-Oct 1991.

  • In 1991, LIB JARRETT defeated COR GLENDON JONES by 2,409 votes.

  • JARRETT appointed Minister of Supply and Services, Oct 9/91; Min of State for Mines and Energy, Apr 27/94.

  • In 1995, LIB PETER LeBLANC defeated PC JOHN van KRALINGEN by 1,210 votes.
