Riding Profile:
It is a riding divided in two by the St. John River.

It represents all of Fredericton south of the St John River and east of the properties fronting on Regent Street and south of properties fronting on Beaverbrook St. on the intersection of Waterloo Row and Forest Hill Road; excludes properties fronting on Route 102 to the Princess Margaret Bridge.

In addition, it covers all that part of the city north of the St. John River and east of Nashwaak River. It encompasses that part of Fredericton known as Marysville on the western side of the Nashwaak River from the rear lines of the properties fronting on the north side of Veteran's Drive to the northern limit of properties fronting on Perley Avenue.

This riding includes the University of New Brunswick, Doak Settlement, and Vanier Industrial Park.

Redistribution:
This riding was created in the 1995 redistribution from parts of Fredericton North and Fredericton South.

From Fredericton South (approx. 6350 voters):all that part of city of Fredericton south of the St. John River; east of properties fronting on Regent St.; south of properties fronting on Beaverbrook St. to intersection of Waterloo Row and Forest Hill Road.

From Fredericton North (approx. 3450 voters): all that part of City of Fredericton north of St. John River; east of Nashwaak River; that part of Fredericton known as Marysville on western side of Nashwaak River.

Political History:

  • Fredericton, new in 1967, was a 2-member seat (took 2 members from York).

  • FREDERICTON NORTH

  • PC LAWRENCE GARVIE, elected in Fredericton riding in by-election on June 10/68 and 1970, won here in 1974.

  • PC ED ALLEN won in 1978 and 1982.

  • In 1987, LIB JIM WILSON defeated PC ED ALLEN by 3,083 votes.

  • In 1991, now COR's ED ALLEN defeated LIB WILSON by 2,188 votes.

  • FREDERICTON SOUTH:

  • PC EVERETT CHALMERS won in Fredericton in 1960, 1963, 1967, 1970 and in this riding in 1974.

  • In 1978, PC BUD BIRD defeated LIB STEPHEN PATTERSON by 1,273 votes.

  • In 1982, PC DAVE CLARK defeated LIB STEVE PATTERSON by 1,138 votes.

  • In 1987, LIB RUSS KING defeated PC CLARK by 4,712 votes.

  • In 1991, LIB KING defeated COR MERYL SARTY by 1,289 votes.

  • FREDERICTON FORT NASHWAAK

  • In 1995, LIB GREG BYRNE defeated PC BRENT BISHOP by 1,777 votes.

  • BYRNE appointed Minister of State for Mines and Energy, July 21/97-Feb 6/98 - resigned to run for LIB leadership. Appointed Minister of Justice, Attorney-General, Min responsible for Service NB, Government House Leader, May 14/98.

  • In 1999 PC ERIC D. MACKENZIE defeated LIB GREG BYRNE 264 votes.
