This is the final post to Tory Trails. It's now time to look forward to the next election.
Progressive Conservative party members in New Brunswick will choose their next leader on Oct. 18, 2008. After narrowly losing the 2006 election, Tories are looking for someone who can fill the shoes of former premier Bernard Lord and bring the party back to power. The CBC's Jacques Poitras will blog regularly during the race and looks forward to hearing from party members and other New Brunswickers who are following the contest.

So David Alward takes it comfortably, 2,269 votes to 1,760. "It wasn't quite as close as I thought it would be,” said the vanquished Robert MacLeod, “but I congratulate David and I'll be there to work with him and move the party ahead as usual."
Analysis and observations to come later.

The convention is just getting underway. I did a quick spin through the hospitality suites last night, and while there was still no sign of rancour between the camps, there was an edginess that comes with the fact that it’s finally time for party members to cast their ballots.
Bernard Lord gave a good speech tonight. He’s generally effective, and sometimes far better, at a podium, though he can be pedantic and long-winded. Tonight he was neither.
The convention is now upon us.
