Free noonhour concerts Thursdays at Glenn Gould Studio

The November 5, 2006 broadcast of Music Around Us on Radio Two features Dominic Teresi, Baroque bassoon, with Aisslinn Nosky and Julia Wedman, violins, Patrick Jordan, viola, and Joëlle Morton, violone and viola da gamba.

The production will be taped live on Thursday October 26.

THE PERFORMERS:

Dominic Teresi, Baroque bassoon

A native of California, DominicTeresi is in his fifth season as principal bassoonist of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. He also shares leadership of Chiaroscuro, an ensemble dedicated to the discovery and performance of 17th-century music for winds and strings. Mr. Teresi is in increasing demand as a specialist on dulcian, baroque and classical bassoons and has also performed with Toronto Consort, Le Concert d'Astrée, Chatham Baroque, Spiritus Collective, Washington Bach Consort and Apollo's Fire, among others. He has appeared on stage at many of the worlds leading festivals including Aspen, Ravinia, Mostly Mozart in New York, Salzburg, Klang und Raum, San Luis Obispo Mozart, Bloomington Early Music and Lamèque.

Mr. Teresi's recent recording releases include a recording of Fasch's Concerto in C minor on Tafelmusik's CD Concerti Virtuosi, nominated for a 2006 Juno award, and Beethoven Symphonies 5 and 6 with Tafelmusik, winner of a 2006 Juno award. Upcoming CD releases include music from the 17th-century collection Prothimia Suavissima with Chatham Baroque and Mozart Symphonies 40 and 41 with Tafelmusik.

Mr. Teresi currently teaches at Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute and Amherst Early Music Festival and has given masterclasses at Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Mr. Teresi holds a Master of Music degree and an Artist Diploma in modern bassoon from Yale University and a medaille d'or from the Conservatoire National de Region in Bordeaux, France. He is completing doctoral research in early music at Indiana University-Bloomington.

Aisslinn Nosky, violin

Aisslinn Nosky is a versatile musician with a passion for Baroque and chamber music. She has appeared in this series several times. Ms. Nosky has brought an enthusiastic new audience to baroque music through her work with the flamboyant and inventive I Furiosi Baroque Ensemble, featured in this series in 2001. She is a member of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and the Aradia Ensemble. As a member of the Kirby String Quartet (featured in this series last season), Ms. Nosky plays a wide-ranging and eclectic repertoire, and is in demand as a chamber music coach as well as a performer. Since 2005 The Kirby Quartet has taught at the Advanced Summer Chamber Music Workshop at the Langley Music School. Active as an orchestral musician, Ms. Nosky was Assistant Principal Second Violin of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra from 2003-2005, has appeared as Guest Concertmaster with Symphony Nova Scotia on several occasions, and has played with the Toronto Symphony and National Ballet of Canada Orchestras.

Julia Wedman, violin

Julia is a core member of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra. She performs regularly with the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, Bach Consort, Opera Atelier, and the Aradia Ensemble with whom she has recorded many CDs for the Naxos label. Julia is also a member of I Furiosi Baroque Ensemble, and the Kirby String Quartet.

Originally from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Julia completed her Bachelor's degree at the University of Western Ontario as a student of Lorand Fenyves. She did graduate studies at the University of Toronto with Mayumi Seiler and Indiana University at Bloomington where she was a student of Franco Gulli and baroque violinist Stanley Ritchie. As a student, she spent summers touring with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, the World Youth Orchestra and the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Orchestra. She was a frequent resident artist at the Banff Centre for the Arts where she also spent a winter session. She was a member of the Bomari String Quartet, the Banff Centre's 1999 summer ensemble in residence. Julia has spent several summers playing chamber music at Le Domaine Forget Music Festival, and is also a frequent guest at Festival of the Sound, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and the Grand River Baroque Festival.

Joëlle Morton, violone and viola da gamba

Joëlle Morton performs professionally on violas da gamba, violone and double bass. Active primarily as a soloist and chamber musician, she works in the US, Canada and Europe, directing the Scaramella chamber series in Toronto, as a founding member of Sympatica in New York City, and making regular appearances with Tafelmusik, the New York Collegium, the Musicians in Ordinary, Parthenia-A Consort of Viols, Artek, Philomel, Concert Royal, Brandywine Baroque and Ensemble Soleil. In addition to performing and teaching, Joëlle is much in demand as a musicologist and clinician, presenting lecture/demos on the history and development of string instruments at conservatories and universities throughout the US. Her scholarly articles have appeared in the journal of the Viola da gamba Society of Americast, Double Bassist magazine and Bass World. She has published several editions of music for lyra viol (available from PRB Productions) and she serves as general editor for the publications of the International Society of Bassists. Joëlle may be heard on recent recordings with Concert Royal, Musica Viva, Ensemble de'Medici, the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra and Celtic harpist Lynette Johnson.

Patrick Jordan, viola

Patrick Jordan, a native of West Texas, is a member of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra with which he tours throughout Canada, the United States, Mexico, Asia and Europe. He is also the Artistic Administrator and violist with the Gallery Players of Niagara. He has played in the Boston Early Music Festival Orchestra since 1997, is the principal violist at the Carmel Bach Festival in California, and has appeared with the New York Collegium and the Toronto Consort. While living in Boston, he performed regularly with D.C. Hall's Band (a recreation of a 19th-century dance and concert band), the van Swieten Quartet, a period instrument string quartet, and the Handel & Haydn Society Orchestra. He was a member of the Boston Quartet, a modern instrument string quartet, and the Really Eclectic String Quartet (RESQ), a group that explored popular dance and lyrical music from many cultures. From 1988 to 1993 he was Lecturer in Violin and Viola at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA; he is currently on the faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Mr. Jordan has recorded for Sony, Sony Classical, Dorian, Newport Classic, NorthStar, Analekta and Northeastern.

Charlotte Nediger, harpsichord

A native of southwestern Ontario, harpsichordist Charlotte Nediger holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Western Ontario, and a solo diploma from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in the Netherlands. She joined the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra as principal keyboard player in 1980 and has held that position ever since. She has an extensive background in research and musicology, and works behind the scenes at Tafelmusik as Assistant to the Music Director, Librarian and Programme Editor. She is also Artistic Coordinator of the annual Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute. As a performer Ms. Nediger is one of only a few keyboard players to specialize in orchestral continuo playing. She has also remained active as a recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist. She appears frequently as soloist with Tafelmusik, and is featured on their recordings of J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and W.F. Bach Instrumental Music, both on Sony's Vivarte label. Charlotte teaches at the University of Toronto and at the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory of Music.
