Marianna Humetska, piano
Born in Ukraine, Marianna began her studies with her mother and while studying at the music school for gifted children in Ukraine started playing concerts and participating in international competitions. Top prizes include the Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians in Moscow and the "Virtuosos of the Year 2000" competition in St. Petersburg. Recently Marianna won the Concerto Competition at the Glenn Gould School of Music in Toronto, the Marusia Yaworska Award from the University of Ottawa and played in the semifinals of the Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary.
Concert appearances include recitals and chamber music performances in Canada, USA, Germany, Austria, England, Switzerland, Finland, Poland, Ukraine and Russia. Marianna performed at Rheinghau Festival in Germany, Kuhmo Festival in Finland and Niagara International Chamber Music Festival in Canada, among others.
She has played as a soloist with numerous orchestras including the London Soloists Orchestra in England, the Russian National Orchestra and the State Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine. Last year Marianna performed Beethoven's Emperor Concerto together with Simon Streatfield conducting the Royal Conservatory Orchestra in Glenn Gould Studio.
Marianna moved to Canada in 2001 after graduating from the Moscow Conservatory where she studied with Professor Vera Gornostayeva. In 2003 Marianna obtained her Artist Diploma from the Glenn Gould School of Music in Toronto from the studio of John Perry.
The Tokai String Quartet
The Tokai String Quartet was formed in August of 2002. They recently returned from competing in the Banff International String Quartet Competition. The quartet received the Felix Galimir Chamber Music Award at the University of Toronto in 2003, and were quartet-in-residence at the Silverstrov Group Concert Series. The Tokai has attended master classes given by the Emerson, Ying, and St. Lawrence quartets, and performed the Mendelssohn Octet with the St. Lawrence String Quartet in March 2004.
