Micah Heilbrunn - New Generation Series 2006
The November 12 broadcast of Music Around Us on Radio Two features Micah Heilbrunn, clarinet with Leonie Wall, flute, Sarah Jeffrey, oboe, Sandra Baron, violin, and Gregory Oh, piano.
The production will be taped live on Thursday November 2.

THE PERFORMERS:
Micah Heilbrunn, clarinet
Born in London Ontario, Micah Heilbrunn first appeared in this New Generation series playing Schubert's Shepherd on the Rock last spring. He is currently acting principal clarinet of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Micah is a graduate of the Interlochen Arts Academy and received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Michigan.
Micah has served as principal clarinet with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. He has taught the clarinet at Brandon University and the University of Windsor and has been heard in live broadcast on the CBC and National Public Radio. In Toronto, he has been an active orchestral and chamber musician playing regularly with groups including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the National Ballet of Canada and the Canadian Opera Company, with whom he just completed playing Wagner's Ring cycle. Micah has been a featured artist at the Aspen Music Festival, The Winnipeg New Music Festival and the Scotia Festival of music where he has been teaching and playing the past three summers. An advocate of new music, Micah has been a member of the Aspen Contemporary ensemble, Brave New Works ensemble and has played with Toronto groups Toca Loca and New Music Concerts.
Leonie Wall, flute
Leonie Wall has held the position of second flute with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since September 2004. She completed her Bachelor's degree with Timothy Hutchins at McGill University in 2002 and continued her studies with Jeanne Baxtresser at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Leonie was twice a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, and has performed at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, the National Orchestral Institute in Maryland, and at the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. In 2004, Leonie won first prize at the prestigious New York Flute Club Competition.
Sarah Jeffrey, oboe
Sarah Jeffrey was featured in this New Generation series in November 2004. She became Principal Oboe of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra during the 2005-2006 season. She has previously held Principal Oboe positions with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, L'Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.
Sarah studied at the University of Toronto under the tutelage of Richard Dorsey. As a recipient of the Chalmers Award from the Ontario Arts Council, she completed her Master's degree at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Sarah has participated in numerous music festivals including the Tanglewood Music Center, the National Orchestral Institute in Maryland and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. She was a featured soloist during the Windsor Symphony's 2003-2004 season performing the Vaughan Williams Oboe Concerto, broadcast on this program. Next season, she will perform Jaques Hetu's Concerto for Oboe and English horn with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Sarah is on the faculties of the University of Toronto and the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music.
Sandra Baron, violin
A native of Calgary and an alumnus of the Academy Program at Mount Royal College, Sandra Baron went on to pursue her Bachelor's degree from McGill University and her Master's degree from Yale University. After her studies, Sandra returned to Canada to begin a varied and busy freelance career in Toronto which has included regular appearances with the Toronto Symphony and the Esprit Orchestra, among others. To satisfy her love of chamber music in its many configurations, Sandra helped to found the women's music co-operative Belladonna, performing a range of musical styles in unusual venues. This interest in non-classical genres has also led to collaborations with Jane Siberry, Feist, and the electro-improv ensemble Red Arm Band. Sandra has been a member of the Santa Fe Opera since 2001 and recently celebrated her tenth season with the Canadian Opera Company orchestra.
Gregory Oh, piano
Canadian pianist Gregory Oh has appeared in this New Generation series several times in both a solo and chamber music capacity. He holds graduate degrees from the University of Toronto and the University of Michigan. He teaches at the University of Toronto, plays harpsichord in überband The Lollipop People, directs the new music group Toca Loca and appears with a wide variety of ensembles across Canada. He spends his spare time trying to fix his bike and guiltily watching Grey's Anatomy.
