“The idea behind this recording was conceived several years
ago. I happen to share a birthday with Mozart – January 27th –
and it struck me that my 30th birthday, in 2006, would coincide with Mozart’s
250th. I had always hoped to record Mozart’s violin concertos, so
it seemed natural to celebrate both Mozart’s birthday and my own with
a recording of these works. While I have been fortunate to have had the
pleasure of playing Mozart with many great conductors, I decided that for
this recording I wanted to lead these pieces myself. In the fall of 2003,
I had a discussion with my good friends Jonathan Crow and Molly Read regarding
orchestras with which I could possibly record. They suggested that the ideal
orchestra for this project would be one that I would form myself, an “all-star”
ensemble made up of some of my favourite players from around the globe.”
James Ehnes
This is the fifth recording project for JAMES EHNES on the CBC Records label
(two of which garnered JUNO Awards) and the amazing performance captured
this time around demonstrates yet again his incredible technical and artistic
abilities. The “all-star” band that James put together is equally
brilliant, responding to his playing and conducting with musicality and
great sensitivity - a superb ensemble. All five of the violin concerti by
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are represented on the 2 CD set, along with two
rondos and an adagio, which complete Mozart's oeuvre for violin and orchestra.

"If Beethoven's nature can be compared with the magnificence of a
thunderstorm, then Mozart is an eternally sunny day." – Ferruccio
Busoni.
On January 29, 2006 the international music community will celebrate the
250th anniversary of the birth of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – the most
revered and idolized composer of the classical period.
Although Mozart produced an incredible amount of instrumental, orchestral
and chamber music during his short life (he died at the age of 35), it was
opera – vocal music – that was central to his aesthetic. The
great Moravian pianist Alfred Brendel perhaps summed it up best when he
stated that, “Mozart is one of the most sensuous composers ever. There
is a sensuality too about his melodies. I'm reminded of a lovely sentence
from Busoni, who said a few wonderful things in his aphorisms about Mozart.
Busoni said there was no doubt that Mozart took singing as his starting
point, and from this stems the uninterrupted melodiousness which shimmers
through his compositions like the lovely forms of a woman through the folds
of a flimsy dress. Isn't that wonderful?”
CBC Records is marking the occasion of this anniversary with this collection
of favourite operatic arias and duets featuring three of Canada’s
most outstanding Mozart singers. This accomplished trio includes Canadian-Armenian
soprano ISABEL BAYRAKDARIAN, tenor MICHAEL SCHADE and baritone RUSSELL BRAUN.
All of these artists have enjoyed considerable success nationally and internationally,
recognized for their many Mozart roles and interpretations - Bayrakdarian
as Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Susanna in The Marriage of
Figaro; Schade as Tamino in The Magic Flute, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni,
Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Belmonte in The Abduction from the Seraglio,
and Titus in La Clemenza di Tito; Braun as the Count in The Marriage of
Figaro, the title role in Don Giovanni, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte,
and Papageno in The Magic Flute. RICHARD BRADSHAW is the General Director
of the CANADIAN OPERA COMPANY and has conducted countless performances of
Mozart opera both in Toronto and abroad.

For years, wind players have delighted audiences with music for winds by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. For years, too, many wind players have known of a set of six works, sometimes attributed to Mozart, sometimes not. Several of these octets first came to light a few months only after Mozart’s death, among a flood of 70 new publications.
All six of the Octets (or Partitas) for winds are included on this first complete, double-CD recording by the FESTIVAL WINDS. Three works (K. Anh.C 17.04, 17.05, and 17.07) are performed from the first ever critical edition of material that can be traced back to the weeks following Mozart's death. Three other works (K. Anh.C 17.01, 17.02 and 17.03) are also a first recording of a new critical edition. The editions were made by David Bourque, clarinetist with the Festival Winds.
Detailed analytical notes by Mozart scholar Daniel N. Leeson provide extensive background information on the works.
The recording also includes a bonus track of Beethoven’s Rondino in E flat, WoO 25.
This delightful music all falls in the tradition of late 18th century harmoniemusik for winds. The classic harmonie band of pairs of clarinets, oboes, French horns, and bassoons flourished in Mozart’s last decade and for a decade beyond. It played an important part in the social and musical life of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1782 until the rise of Napoleon.
For over two decades, the Festival Winds have performed harmoniemusik at the annual Festival of the Sound in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada. In keeping with the performance practices of the time, they are joined by double bass player Joel Quarrington. They invite the listener to enjoy this double CD recording - the first recording of the complete wind octets of K. Anhang C.- and decide for themselves whether the music comes from the pen of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
