The Montreal Matters Go Green Challenge: Now it’s your turn! Here are 10 changes you can make to your daily routine and habits in order to reduce your impact on the environment. These seem simple at first but a small change can make a big difference. Choose one or more of the actions and try to stick to it through the month of October. Then tell us about it … on our web forum, via email or by calling Montreal Matters talkback line.

1. Car free day
Leave the car at home one day a week (or more!) Use public transit, your bike, a bus, carpool or walk to where you need to go.

2. No more plastic bags
Carry a cloth bag in your purse or backpack, or leave one hanging by the door of the house of office. Take it with you one shopping trips to the market, pharmacy or the mall. Use the cloth bag instead of leaving with another plastic bag.

3. Use a travel coffee mug
You don’t need to give up the coffee – just the paper or Styrofoam it comes in!

4. Avoid the dryer
See if you can cut your dryer use by half using a clothesline or drying rack.

5. Down with garbage!
Try to reduce your household waste to one bag of garbage a week or less.

6. Replace as many light-bulbs as you can with compact fluorescents

7. Eat local!
Shop for fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, etc. that have been grown within 100km of Montreal.

8. Compost – with or without worms!

9. Cut down on water use

10. Eat meat-free meals one day a week
