What is Montreal Matters?
It is our city's most comprehensive, revealing and thought-provoking
exploration of an issue that matters to Montrealers. Montreal
Matters is a multi-media, multi-partner initiative spearheaded
by CBC Montreal. This is the seventh edition of Montreal Matters.
We've looked at MONEY, HOME, FOOD, WORK, SCHOOL and THE ENVIRONMENT.
In 2008 we turn to YOUTH.
Background on Montreal Matters
The idea for Montreal Matters came from a series in Chicago
called Chicago Matters, now in its 18th year. Chicago Matters
is a multimedia public affairs series, aired/published by
Chicago Public Radio (WBEZ), Public Television (WTTW), the
Chicago Reporter (a non-profit monthly newsmagazine, focusing
on issues of race and poverty), and the Chicago Public Library.
Some past topics of Chicago Matters have included Housing,
Health, Violence, Work, Our Children, Seeking Justice, Our
Region Our Community, Questions of Faith, and Immigration.
The Chicago Community Trust, a community foundation, funds
the Chicago Matters series. They have many links to community
groups, and are the conduit for bringing the community’s
concerns to the table. For more information on Chicago Matters
go to www.chicagomatters.org
While Montreal Matters is based on the concept of Chicago
Matters, we had to find our own way to make it work here.
We’ve gone about getting that in different ways —
everything from choosing partners connected to the community,
to asking for suggestions and participation from community
groups.
