Through Montreal Matters CBC is reaching out to the community in an effort to enhance debate and discussion around issues of importance to Montrealers. The FGM is a community foundation and, as such, is an organization committed to improving the quality of life in the community. It too is interested in engaging in discussions with Montrealers about issues of broad concern in an effort to find new and effective solutions. Connecting with the community through CBC radio provides the FGM with an excellent opportunity to fulfil its mission. In short, Montreal Matters to the FGM.

Breakfast-conference:
The FGM hosted a breakfast-conference on October 21st from 7:30 to 9:00. The theme of the conference was poverty, home and youth. Réal Raymond, president and CEO of the National Bank of Canada co-hosted the event at the National Bank head office.

Conference speakers included:

Dr Richard Lessard, Director of Public Health for Montreal;

Dr Diane Benoit, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at
the University of Toronto, Associate Scientist in the Research Institute and Staff Psychiatrist at the Hospital for Sick Children;

Dr Richard Tremblay, Professor of Pediatrics, Pshychiatry and Psychology at the University of Montréal and Canada Research Chair in Child Development;

Madame Lyse Brunet, VP Développement social at Centraide.

The speakers looked at the situation of poverty in Montreal, the effect of poverty on the home, parental skills, and child development ; poverty as a major indicator for behavioural problems in youth, and finally, effective interventions at a community level.

The invited guests were members of the business and professional community. The FGM wished to engage the people present in a discussion to deepen their understanding of the problems faced by families living in poverty and some of the solutions that have proven to be effective.

Drawing-Exhibit:
There also was a drawing exhibit at the head office of the National Bank of Canada by children and youth in care at Batshaw Youth and Family Centres on the theme of “Home”.
