What is a Sing-In?
For more than 30 years, Montrealers have flocked to The Church of St Andrew and St Paul to participate in the Sing-In, while thousands more CBC listeners from across the country have looked forward to its annual broadcast.
What is a Sing-In? It's not exactly a Sing-a-long - the audience only sings during parts of the event and listens to the rest. It's not quite a concert - the Sing-In was conceived as a radio broadcast with spoken word featured prominently throughout. And it's not really a church service - though the Bible is read and the minister of the church plays an important role. One thing is clear, however: what began as a radio broadcast has become a Montreal Christmas tradition.
Like all great traditions, the Sing-In has evolved over the years, though it has of late settled into its own rhythm and ritual. The thousand-strong audience joins in the singing of favourite carols such as Joy to the World and Hark the Herald Angels, all in stirring arrangements with brass and organ. Festive music for church choir, brass ensemble, and organ lets the audience rest from its singing. The Christmas Story from the Gospel according to St. Luke is read, and the minister of the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul tells a story with a Christmas theme. The audience always gets the last word at the Sing-In with a rousing rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah.
A collection is taken each year at the Sing-In to aid a local charitable organization. Over the past thirty-plus years, the CBC Christmas Sing-In has raised more than $125,000 for twenty-five Montreal charities. In 2000, the Sing-In was the recipient of a prestigious Gabriel Award.
