Profiles

Blake, the main daytime radio host, aka DJ Budda Blaze by night, is a hip-hop scientist extraordinaire and a founding member of FBI. He is an angry young man with razor-sharp wits and humour, who came of age during the Oka crisis, among tanks, hip-hop and speedmetal. His father and brothers all worked high steel in New York, but Blake's only passion has been music, since age eleven. It always kept him active and out of trouble. Nowadays he breathes hip-hop, eats vinyl records and churns out tons of beats from his home-made studio in his small house. He grooms his (hair) mohawk carefully, and is one of the few young people in town who still speak the Mohawk language. You can check him out at www.myspace.com/buddablaze.

Sonny Joe is a retired steelworker-turned DJ who plays vintage jazz and country to a mesmerized audience on anything from vinyl to eight-track cassettes. He is in his seventies, has Duke Ellington class, humour, charm, and a house filled with thousands of records. His life went from a happy childhood in a traditional home on the St-Lawrence River, to forced residential school in Ontario and to losing the family home when the Canada Seaway was built in the sixties. After years of high steel work in Manhattan and some heavy drinking, he conquered it all back with music. He hasn't touched a drop of alcohol in decades, and from the backdoor of the studio at the K he can see the land where his house once stood. Huge boats go by to the sounds of Benny Goodman and Hank Williams, as Sonny Joe taps his foot.

Andy, self-proclaimed "shmoehawk", a Jewish professional wrestler of 230lbs and country DJ at The K. Andy was cheered along by all of Kahnawake as he defeated the legendary King-Kong Bundy (350lbs) on the local wrestling ring .

Christine, community worker extraordinaire, mother and TV host, paddles across the St-Lawrence in her canoe and has been the host of Friday night's Radio Bingo since she was sixteen, for a total of twenty-three years of radio. She's a hero in town and a lucid, intelligent, deeply involved citizen.

Alex Margineanu (director/producer), has shot over fifty documentary films as a documentary cinematographer over the past ten years. In 2005 he directed and produced a half-hour documentary entitled Mamaie. His cinematography credits include Le 4125 Parthenais (Isabelle Lavigne), Les Justes (Stéphane Thibault/Karyna Goma), The Hostage (Carl Leblanc), Caporal Mark (Danic Champoux), Au nom de la mére et du fils (Maryse Legagneur), Maestro! (Hugo Latulippe), 50 tonnes d'épinettes (BrunoBoulianne) and J'me voyais déjà (B. Bensaddek), among others.

All photo credits unless otherwise specified: Alex Margineanu

How did you get involved in Doc Shop 6?
To get involved with Doc Shop, you submit a proposal with a project idea. I had been exploring the underdeveloped-developing neighborhoods of St. Henri and Point St. Charles and was very inspired by the neighborhood. So I got involved in Doc Shop 6 because I knew from teachers at Concordia University that it was a great program for young, student filmmakers. It was the perfect opportunity to share a specific perspective of domestic spaces.

What was the best part about participating?
The best part about participating was the grant money! My partner, Melanie Godoy and I were able to use the budget to rent equipment that we had not yet used as students. We had a lot of fun with lens attachments, especially gradient filters!

What's next for you?
I am creating a series of marketing videos for a wonderful local theater company, Imago Theater. The testimonial style portraits will be of Montrealers whose lives reflect some of the dilemmas that the fascinating characters in the play War Zones (Champs de Mars) must face. They will be posted online daily leading up to the opening night of the play. Melanie is doing very well at Concordia in the Communication Studies department still producing student works. She is always working on creative projects and has really gotten into Photoshop and still photography.
