Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the latest movie from the Judd Apatow crew, which made 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up and Superbad (along with stinkers like Drillbit Taylor), and like those movies, this film continues the revitalization of the adult sex comedy genre.
Jason Segel, who also wrote the script, stars as Peter Bretter, a TV music composer dating the show's leading lady, Sarah Marshall, played by Kristen Bell.
But, in the opening scene, she dumps him, while he's naked, we see more of Jason Segel in the first five minutes of this movie than we may have ever wanted to, but it's comic gold.
Unable to get over her, he heads to Hawaii for a vacation, only to find that she's there too, with her new boyfriend, an oversexed, gyrating, stoner philosopher and British pop star, played with over the top zeal by Russell Brand.
In Hawaii, Peter hooks up with the hotels concierge Rachel, played by Mila Kunis, who most will remember from That '70s Show. While this may seem like a typically contrived romantic comedy plot, it never comes off that way, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall manages the difficult task of being both hilarious and heartfelt, a combination this cadre of comedians has mastered.
It never over references pop culture, and yet it's sharp when it does, the running gag of the TV show they work on, a CSI spoof starring Billy Baldwin is both funny and biting.
Once again, as we saw with Seth Rogan and Knocked Up, this film acts as a star maker for its leads, namely Segel who is pitch perfect as the doughy geek hero, and on a personal note, I'd just like to applaud the rise of the doughy geek hero who gets the girl in movies, it's about time, as he's what centres the film, he's the everyman, stuck with the impossibly good looking, and in the end, that's what makes you believe.
The film also does wonders for Mila Kunis, who is perfectly cast as the other girl and this may be the role that finally turns her into a movie star.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the funniest movie I've seen this year, and if you're going to see a movie this weekend (that's not at Hot Docs), this should be it.
