Fatoumata Diawara

Fatoumata Diawara, a singer and guitarist from Mali, has been called the most beguiling talent to hit the world music scene in some time. Our music columnist Errol Nazareth says Diawara's debut album, "Fatou", features her powerful voice accompanied by a folksy sound that is a blend of African, jazz, blues and pop. She has thrown her support behind a very cool organization called "Half The Sky Movement" External Site. It was inspired by the best-selling book, "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide", which is now also a documentary that will be aired on PBS, on October 1 and 2 External Site.
