Walk down the dark side of the runway, into the underbelly of modeling with the North American television debut of the acclaimed documentary Girl Model, airing Sunday, Oct. 14 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBC News Network's THE PASSIONATE EYE. Exposing the exploitation of pre-pubescent Russian girls recruited for the Japanese modeling industry, Girl Model follows 13-year-old Nadya as she encounters a much different world than the glamorous and lucrative lifestyle she was promised.
Girl Model airs on CBC News Network's THE PASSIONATE EYE, Sunday, Oct. 14, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
Despite a lack of obvious similarities, Siberia and Tokyo are connected by a thriving modeling industry. Young girls hailing from impoverished villages in Siberia are lured to Tokyo by scouts promising fame and fortune on the catwalk. Hear from American model scout Ashley as she scours the Russian countryside looking for fresh faces, and from her latest discovery, Nadya. Young Nadya, only 13-years-old, is plucked from her rural home and brought on her own to the bustling center of Tokyo on the promise of a profitable career--that never materializes. After months of fruitless casting calls and mounting expenses the frustrating reality of these young girls' lives is unveiled.
Girl Model is directed and produced by David Redmon and Ashley Sabin who are available for interviews. It was produced in association with CBC News Network, POV in the U.S., and BBC Storyville in the U.K.
