The Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) Warns Jump Rope For Heart Lava Lamps Are a Potential Fire Hazard.

June 22, 2006

The Lava Lamps were a thank-you prize offered to students who reached Level 4 in the Jump Rope for Heart program. There is the possibility that the liquid in the Lava Lamps can leak out of the top part of the lamp. If the lamp is plugged into the wall and turned on this can cause sparks and a potential fire hazard.

Not every Lava Lamp will leak or cause sparks, but it’s difficult to determine which ones will, so we are taking the safest course of action and have stopped distribution of the Lava Lamps.

As soon as we became aware of the sparking issue we immediately stopped shipment and started the advisory process. We are informing all participating schools, teachers, parents and children, and replacing the product as quickly as possible.

We are notifying all schools that have already received the Lava Lamps, and have asked them to halt distribution immediately. We are sending letters explaining the situation and the product advisory to all schools, teachers, and parents involved in Jump. We are also keeping the Consumer Product Safety Division of Health Canada fully informed.

Each child who should have received a Lava Lamp will receive a $10.00 Sears gift certificate mailed to them once they apply by mail or online. They will need their school letter which contains a passcode to apply.

Parents should dispose of the Lava Lamp if they have already received one. They can reply online or return the reply card in order to receive their child’s gift certificate

Schools that already received their student thank-you prizes (for 2006-2007) will receive a package for each student that received a Lava Lamp. There will be a letter for the teacher outlining the problem and our request that they distribute the letters to their students. There will be a letter from Corporate Express apologizing for the issues this year.

Schools that have not received their student thank-you prizes will also receive a package. There will be a letter for the teacher outlining the problem and our request that they distribute the letters to their students. There will be a letter from Corporate Express apologizing for the issues this year. There will be one letter for each child who will not receive the Lava Lamp. There will be a letter from Corporate Express for each child who will not receive the Lava Lamp.
