Product Warning
Child resistant cap on Eucalyptus Oil BP bottles is defective
May 1, 2006

Health Canada is advising consumers that the child resistant caps on bottles of Eucalyptus Oil BP are not functioning properly. This poses a risk that children could accidentally ingest the product.

Each bottle contains enough eucalyptus oil to seriously harm a child, and ingestion could lead to severe poisoning. Symptoms can include a burning sensation in the mouth, nausea, vomiting, headache, as well as life-threatening reactions such as seizures.

Eucalyptus Oil BP is advertised as a treatment for coughs due to colds, and is manufactured by Rougier Pharma, a division of ratiopharm Inc. The Drug Identification Number (DIN) for this product is 00487554 and can be found on the product label.

The child-resistant cap functions when the bottle is properly closed. However, in some cases, the security seal can exert enough pressure to deactivate the child resistant cap. Consumers are advised, when removing the seal, to make sure to tighten the cap in order for it to be properly engaged. If it does not work, return the product to the point of purchase.

It is important to store products containing eucalyptus oil carefully and to keep them out of the sight and reach of children.

To report a suspected adverse reaction with these or any other health product, please contact the Canadian Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Program (CADRMP) of Health Canada by one of the following methods:
