There are cheaper ways to find a date. The Internet is loaded with sites for searching singles — many free, if you're a woman. Judy Anderson has spent the past year looking for love — online.

Judy Anderson

It's hard to find a date when you're over 40, as I am — except to go to bars and I hate that so I didn't want to do that. So I thought I'd try something different; something my friends had tried. One of them even wound up marrying a person found online.

I discovered there are hundreds of sites on the Internet dedicated to helping singles find each other — from the most harmless penpals to the most outrageous sexy, kinky, perversion sites you can imagine

Most of the sites are free to join, but it's a bit of a come-on because you have to pay when you meet someone and can wind up paying hundreds of dollars depending on the time you spend online. But some sites are free to women so I joined three of those.

Replies? I've received lots. In the past six months, I've met a dozen guys for lunch or dinner. Most didn't work out — but I liked two of them. One didn't like me, the other did. We are still in touch.

Looking for Mr. Right — online.

Here are some of the things I learned:

  1. Men cheat
75 per cent of the guys who responded to my ad were married and looking for a discreet relationship.
  2. Men want sex
Some men will do anything for sex — even though I specified that I want to meet someone in my own age group, I get letters from much younger men looking to fulfil their fantasy of being with an older woman. Give me a break.
  3. Men like photos
Why is it men feel I'd be attracted looking a picture of their private parts?
  4. Men lie!
Men lie about their hair, weight and their height. Do they think I won't notice they are short or their hair is grey when they told me it was brown?
  5. Creepy guys
I can tell if a guy is creepy by what they write — if they talk too much about sex I don't even respond.

So I met a bunch of decent guys — none horrible or disgusting — just looking for Ms. Right. Unfortunately, it wasn't me.

I still hope to meet someone special, but even if I don't, I had a great time and would recommend this experience to anyone.
