Orthokeratology has been called “braces or retainers for the eyes”

Orthokeratology is a procedure using specially designed contact lenses that gently reshape the cornea.

Used overnight, it can provide temporary reduction of myopia, eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses during the day.

Orthokeratology has been called “braces or retainers for the eyes.”

  • Works for people with mild myopia (nearsightedness)

  • It's reversible. The cornea will eventually return to its original shape

  • Effect usually lasts a day or two

  • It's currently being promoted as an alternative to laser surgery for people who want a less invasive procedure to temporarily correct myopia

  • The procedure is performed primarily by optometrists who have special training in the practice of Ortho-k

  • There is still no conclusive scientific evidence that overnight use of ortho-k lenses can arrest or slow the progression of myopia in children

For more information, contact your provincial College of Optometrists, Or the Canadian Ophthalmological Society
