Sad to say, but natural disasters like the Japan quake can bring out the best -- and the worst -- in people.  Now the RCMP are warning about phony charities sprouting up in the wake of the quake.
It's a weekday evening at downtown Toronto grocery store, and the checkout line is filled with pre-occupied Gen Xers heading home in a hurry, mostly armed with prepared hot deli food and frozen dinners. But there's a problem at the cashier: as a customer begins to pay with his debit card, he finds there's already a card left in the terminal.
American and Canadian authorities have have investigated and arrested 65 fraudsters, and received redress worth $18 million from the company they worked for, MoneyGram, for their involvement in an advanced-fee loan scam that Marketplace reported on last year.

MoneyGram International, one of the world's biggest money transfer services, paid for $18 million in cheques that were sent to U.S. consumers yesterday who have been victims of scams involving their service.

Certainly, that would seem the case, judging by the number of and interest in stories about bad service with large corporations.
