Ottawa roofing contractor sentenced to 71 days in jail

An Ottawa-area contractor, Philip Slobodzian, has been sentenced to 71 days in jail and his company, PSC New Home Construction Inc., has been fined $90,000 for violating Ontario's Consumer Protection Act.

The days of unlimited Internet are numbered. Literally. Data over the Internet is now a metered commodity in Canada. Thursday's CRTC decision granted Bell Canada the ability to charge its customers based on the amount of data they download.

"Just looking." Many of us say it almost involuntarily. Admit it, those two words are a kind of defense mechanism, one way to prevent a sales person from setting upon us like a cat with a new toy. I know, because I spent a portion of my young life selling men's clothes. And an awful lot of people who entered the premises were, "just looking."

Infuriating small fees! We've all had to pay them.

They're fees that seem to be for nothing at all, and that you can't negotiate. They're sometimes buried in the fine print, like the $2.00 charge to receive your cell phone bill on paper.

High heels for toddlers? Really?

Has anyone gone shopping for toddler shoes recently?  I decided to take along my six-year-old daughter to help me find shoes for her younger sister. You know, one of those mother-daughter bonding excursions.

After roaming through countless boutiques with not enough sizes and too many expensive designer brands, we head into Payless Shoes.

The first thing my daughter notices is the various heel options for toddlers. She picks up a black suede pump with a heel.
Would you pay $120 a year for roaming charge 'insurance'?

In the lead-up to Christmas, much was made of how last-minute shoppers tended to be men - specifically 50 per cent of men, according to a Leger Marketing poll, released earlier this month.
 
That would have described my husband last year, but this year, hubby took the week off before Christmas and I was the one desperately pulling on locked doors in the final minutes of available Christmas Eve shopping.
