Company statements: Price Tag Confidential

Newell Rubbermaid, parent company for Aprica Brand products:

"At this time, we would like to decline the on-camera interview and provide the following statement.

There are many variables that could lead to different pricing in the juvenile products business in Canada, including importation, transportation, currency fluctuations and distribution costs. Juvenile products are also subject to different compliance standards, which impacts pricing."

Bayer:

Pricing of Bayer products both in Canada and around the world is a reflection of local market dynamics, and varies from country to country. These dynamics are influenced by a variety of factors such as local economic conditions, cost of goods, differences in product formulation and local regulatory, packaging and distribution costs.

Bayer's Aspirin 81mg tablets are priced in line with this policy and a direct comparison of Canadian and US prices is not appropriate. Healthcare products often differ in Canada and the U.S., including formulations of Bayer's products, such as Aspirin 81mg. This in turn entails shorter production runs and higher overall costs of production. In addition, selling costs in Canada are typically higher than in the US and depend on a variety of factors, including costs associated with regulatory approval, manufacturing, transportation, distribution and marketing. Distribution costs, for example, are higher due to Canada's geographic size and population distribution, and marketing costs are higher due to the cost of reach.

These costs are all factors that help determine how Bayer sets its product price to retailers. Bayer regularly reviews this pricing policy to ensure that prices are fair and competitive, and adjusts them as appropriate.

Bayer, second response (requesting more details on earlier statement):

• Local market dynamics refer to a number of factors, predominantly differences in regulatory, production, packaging and distribution requirements. For competitive reasons we do not disclose a detailed cost breakdown of individual products.
• As with many healthcare products, the registered Canadian formulation for Aspirin 81mg differs from that in the US, but shares a common active ingredient, Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA).
• Bayer does not manufacture any healthcare products in Canada. Our Canadian healthcare products are manufactured at various sites across Bayer's global manufacturing network.
• As mentioned, we do not disclose a detailed cost breakdown of individual products for competitive reasons.

Lancôme:

(In response to Marketplace request for information on the research that supports the use of plant stem cells in Lancôme products)

You will find enclosed the press release for Lancôme's Absolue L'Extrait, as well as the results of a study conducted in Europe. This is the information that we have available.

Because of the scientific nature of your questions, I'm afraid that the expert I had in mind is not an appropriate interviewee, and our R&D department is unavailable. Therefore, I'm afraid we cannot respond to your interview request.

(Marketplace repeated the request for an on-camera interview with a representative from Lancôme, but the company "regretfully" declined.)
