How to prevent your money from going down the drain

Have you ever had a salesperson come to your door and offer you a free water test? Did they worry you about your water? The next time you get a knock at the door, here is what you can do:

- Be wary of the health claims these salespeople are making. They tend to use fear mongering as a persuasion technique for you to pay thousands of dollars on a water system you may not need.

- Contact your municipality. Some water filtration salespeople lead you to believe they are testing on behalf of the city but they're not. Your municipality tests your water on a regular basis and will be able to provide you with the most up-to-date information that you can rely on.

- If you are still concerned about the safety of your water, have it tested by an accredited lab. They can test for bacteria and chemical substances in your water so you know exactly what's in it.

- Do your own research! Check out the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines found on Health Canada's website to learn more about what's in your water and how safe it is.
