The Tip Sheet: What to do if you have a problem with your landlord
1. Make requests for repairs in writing and keep a record. 2. Document the problem by taking pictures or video. 3. Don't withhold your rent: you could get evicted. 4. Get in touch with tenant helplines and legal aid clinics. They can offer you advice, and will know what recourse is available in your area. 5. Contact your city bylaw offices or public health office. The can usually order that work be completed. 6. Talk to other tenants in your building: if problems are widespread, form a tenant association. 7. Laws are different in each province, but if your landlord won't fix problems, you might be eligible for compensation or a rent rebate. |
