Video: Certification Requirements
Jacob Savage (featured in the video above) is a former lawn care technician that worked for the Weed Man Cornwall franchise in 2009. He talks about how he was not properly trained, licensed or certified to do the work he was doing.
But all lawn care technicians who spray pesticides or herbicides, even organic ones, are required to either have provincial certification or be supervised by an licensed exterminator to make sure they're applied safely and in an environmentally responsible way.
When an inspector from the provincial ministry of the environment looks into the Weed Man franchise in Cornwall in 2009, he discovers that only three of their eight lawn care staff have certification.
In March 2011, Weed Man pleads guilty to six violations of "The Pesticide Act" and is fined $28,000.
