Erica Johnson puts supermarket fish to the test: are you really getting what you pay for?
ABOUT LABELS: What's in a label?
text
Marketplace purchased fish from major supermarkets in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, and sent them to the University of Guelph to have their DNA tested by biologist Robert Hanner.

The testing revealed that out of the 153 fish products, 22% of them were mislabeled. These results range from some labeling technicalities to outright species substitution.

Responses from retailers:

Sobeys
"After conducting an internal investigation we have determined that the salmon fillets in question were incorrectly labeled as Spring Salmon and Coho Salmon due to human error. We have taken this matter seriously and assure you that there was no intent to mislead our customers but rather it was an honest and isolated mistake. Our clear expectation, in all of our stores, is that all product is labeled correctly. As a result of our investigation, we have put in place new processes and additional staff training has taken place to prevent future occurrences."

Loblaws
"Rest assured that Loblaw Companies Limited as well as all its corporate and franchised stores offer products that conform to federal regulations established by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) as well as Health Canada.

"Loblaw has implemented a rigorous quality assurance procedure, particularly for fish and seafood. We work closely with our suppliers and perform regular checks to ensure the authenticity, safety, and quality of our fish and seafood.
"

Metro
“We’re working with human beings and mistakes can happen… the substitution probably occurred in the store.”
