Sprinkler systems and nursing homes
PROVINCIAL AND TERRITORIAL LAWS: Sprinkler systems and nursing homes
RELATED LINKS: Burning Question
text
The chart below gives information about the installation of sprinklers in nursing homes in each Canadian province and territory. Across Canada, newly built nursing homes are required to install sprinklers during construction.

Only five Canadian provinces have fully enforced the retroactive installation of sprinkler systems in nursing homes. These provinces are: New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Yukon.

In Saskatchewan, sprinkler system retrofitting has begun and is due to be complete in 2013.

The first two columns of the chart only refer only to nursing homes*. This does not include other types of senior’s residential facilities that often fall under another classification type in both National and Provincial building codes. Only three Canadian provinces have put sprinklers in all senior’s facilities whether nursing homes or residential retirement type homes. These provinces are Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador and Yukon.

*"Nursing Homes" fall under a B2 classification in the National Building Code of Canada and does not include seniors residential facilities.

Province/Terriory When did all newly built nursing homes require the installation of sprinklers? Are sprinklers required to be retroactively installed in nursing homes? Are all new and old seniors' occupancies installed with sprinklers in the province?
