Marketplace-EKOS credit card survey
Marketplace polled Canadians about credit cards as part of our investigation into credit balance insurance.

According to the poll conducted for Marketplace, Canadians surveyed feel powerless when it comes to their credit cards — from high interest rates to confusing fine print to hidden fees — and they want a consumers’ “Bill of Rights” to protect them.

Some highlights of the Marketplace-EKOS poll:

Arrow 23% with credit balance insurance say they weren’t given full disclosure when it was sold to them.

Arrow 22% with the insurance say it was never explained the policy was optional.

Arrow 51% with the insurance say it was never explained that policy would not pay their entire balance if they lost their job or fell ill.

Arrow 56% with the insurance said it was never explained the insurance wouldn’t cover pre-existing medical problems

This survey was conducted February 12-16, 2009. In total, a random sample of 1,036 Canadians aged 18 and over responded to the survey. A sample of this size provides a margin of error of +/- 3.0 percentage points, 19 times out of 20. The margin of error increases when the results are sub-divided (i.e., error margins for sub-groups such as regions).
