As Nova Scotia moves to pass a law making uranium exploration and mining illegal, what's gained and what's lost ?

For a generation in Nova Scotia, the most heated debates over mining have been sparked by uranium. In the early 1980s, public hearings led to a moratorium on uranium exploration and mining. And as recently as last year, mining companies were pleading the case for lifting it, stating that the province was sacrificing tens of millions of dollars in exploration spending.
But on October 14th, the Minister of Natural Resources announced the government would entrench the moratorium in law.
This was disappointing news for the Mining Association of Nova Scotia, which as recently as last week co-hosted a conference on uranium mining and nuclear power. Peter Oram, the Association's president, spoke with us.

Fast & accessible public transport, bike-friendly cities, and a commitment to binding economic development to environmental & social sustainability. So what does that look like ?  Ask a Swede.
That's what a delegation from the Halifax Regional Municipality has been doing on a week long trip to Sweden, a country with an international reputation for leadership on sustainability issues.
So what can we learn from that country, and how could those lessons be useful back here in the Maritimes ? We contacted John Lindsay, president of the private development firm Eastport Properties, in Vaxjo, Sweden.
