Answers to questions about H1N1 and vaccination programmes
October 27, 2009 1:22 PM
- Public health officials in all three Maritime Provinces answered a host of varied questions about H1N1 vaccination programmes
It's the largest mass immunization program ever undertaken in Canada. Right across the country - including the Maritimes - people are lining up to get the H1N1 vaccination.
Medical officials are adamant that any health risks posed by the vaccine are miniscule compared with its benefits. And it's free.
But if the choice is that simple - protect yourself with a free, safe & effective vaccine, or risk serious illness, becoming a carrier, possible hospitalization or even death - why do so many people remain skeptical ? A recent poll showed that less than half the Canadians surveyed plan to get the shot.
That's left public health officials trying to bat down the myths and misconceptions about the H1N1 vaccine, and convince people to roll up their sleeves.
But it's a personal decision, and each person has his or her own questions.
The doctors at the centre of vaccination programs in the Maritimes were on hand to answer specific questions : Dr Heather Morrison, Chief Health Officer for the Department of Health on Prince Edward Island; Dr Eilish Cleary, Chief Medical Officer in New Brunswick; and Dr Robert Strang, Chief Public Health Officer in Nova Scotia.
