Moose, cars and ATVs; the aerial spray debate; bigger trucks with fewer lights; Doug Bethune

- Is it possible to separate moose, automobiles and ATVs safely ?
A place for everything & everything in its place ? Wishful thinking - at least when it comes to cars, moose and All Terrain Vehicles. Or to highways, the forest and ATV trails.
When we built highways through wildlife habitat, this led to collisions between large mammals and people driving cars - often with fatal results for both. New Brunswick responded to public concerns by erecting fences along long stretches of highway that cut through the places that deer & moose roam.
But recently, the New Brunswick ATV Federation asked the province to open moose fencing along some stretches of provincial highways.
We heard from federation President Daniel Boucher, who says it would give his members safer access to trails along busy highways, and from Cathy McCollum of Welsford, who fought to have fencing installed along Highway 7 in New Brunswick after her daughter was in a 2006 motor vehicle accident involving a moose.
Our interview with Betty St-Pierre about aerial spraying over northern new Brunswick forests (see September 18th entry) inspired several e-mails. Maritime Noon producer Deb Woolway read them with Costas.
The Armour Transport fleet (3500 vehicles) is highly visible on Maritime highways. It's head office is in Moncton, but it's opened a warehouse and transloading facility in Dartmouth that helps move container products that come into the port of Halifax.
CN Rail and Canadian Tire are big customers, but president Wes Armour is concerned that some of this lucrative business might evaporate unless Nova Scotia and New Brunswick re-examine rules for long combination vehicles (LCVs) that share the road with cars.We heard part of what he told an audience of Nova Scotia exporters.
We might just be entering autumn, but Doug Bethune is already thinking about winter, and he believes you should, too. He gave his quick to-do list for your vehicle and answered questions about cars, trucks and vans.
