Every year thousands of women from the Philippines leave their own families behind, and come to Canada to work as nannies or home-care workers.
The federal government gives them a two-year visa, under its live-in caregiver program, and once the visa's up, they can apply for landed immigrant status - and eventually become Canadian citizens.
It's an opportunity for foreign workers to make a new home for themselves and their families.
But there has also been bitter criticism of the program...some groups even call it "anti-women" or "racist."
This week, the CBC's Carmen Klassen looks into the issue in the first show of our new season.
