In a country where violence, poverty and political instability are the order of the day, it's the strong who survive.
In Haiti - the most densely populated and poorest nation in the Western hemisphere - it means the weak often don't make it at all.
That's especially true for children
On Maritime Magazine this week, we meet a Canadian woman who spent more than a decade rescuing Haitian children, left abandoned and unwanted.
Karen Huxter runs an orphanage and school in rural Haiti. Her mission is funded through the Wesleyan Church in Yarmouth Nova Scotia.
You will will hear Pauline's interview with Karen, and reporter Stephen Puddicombe's dispatches from her compound in the Haitian countryside.
