Teen Parents
Every mom and dad knows about those parenting moments when you're one step shy of over the edge; walking the floor with an inconsolible infant, trying to calm a temper tantrum or referree sibling squabbles.
Sometimes parenting is a tough job that requires a lot of patience, and a touch of wisdom doesn't hurt.
But imagine what it's like to be a parent, when you're still just a kid yourself.
We have two stories for you today: one is about a young father, who, with a big push from his own mom, is learning to take responsibility for his one year son.
But first...Back in the 1980's, CBC radio contributor Jackie Torrens was a teenage mother.
She remembers a difficult and lonely time, trying to navigate both adolescence and parenthood.
Recently Jackie heard about an organization in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia called S.H.Y.M., or Supportive Housing for Young Mothers.
It's a ten unit apartment building where teen moms get counseling, learn parenting skills.
And have a place to call home while they get their lives back on track.
Jackie talked to 4 of the young mothers to find out - in two decades - if anything has changed.
And what has stayed the same...
