Riding Profile:

This riding has existed since the 1958 election. The central Winnipeg riding is immediately southwest of the downtown core. It runs south from the Assiniboine River in the north to the CNR Main Line in the southwest and Fleet Street in the southeast (east of Cambridge), from the CN and CP lines in the west to Cambridge in the southeast and Stafford in the northeast (north of Fleet St.). The riding includes many of Winnipeg’s oldest and most stately homes, including riverside mansions on prestigious Wellington Crescent. It includes the community of River Heights and part of Crescentwood.

The population in 2001 was 19,425. The average family income of $94,322 was the second highest among the province’s ridings. The unemployment rate was 3.5 per cent. The leading industry was health and social services (13.7%) followed by educational services (13.2%).

2003 LIB Jon Gerrard defeated PC Mike Radcliffe by 1,825 votes.
1999 LIB Gerrard defeated PC Radcliffe by 465 votes.
1995 PC Radcliffe defeated LIB Anita Neville by 994 votes.
1990 LIB Sharon Carstairs defeated PC Shaun McCaffrey by 866 votes. In 1994, Carstairs resigned her seat, resigned as Manitoba Liberal leader and was appointed to Senate by then Prime Minister Jean Chrétien.
1988 LIB Carstairs defeated PC Bob Vandewater by 3,247 votes.
1986 LIB Carstairs defeated PC Steen by 1,485 votes. Carstairs had been elected leader of the Manitoba Liberals in 1984.
1981 PC Warren Steen defeated NDP David Saunders by 1,688 votes. Steen had been MLA for Crescentwood but ran in River Heights when his old riding was abolished.
1979 In a byelection, PC Gary Filmon defeated LIB Jay Prober by 966 votes. After redistribution, Filmon ran in Tuxedo in the 1981 election.
1977, 1973, 1969, 1966 PC Sid Spivak was elected and resigned in 1979.
