Riding Profile:

The riding has existed since the 1969 election. The Red River runs along the western portion of its southern border, and forms all of the western and part of the northern boundary. The rest of the northern boundary is West Fernwood/Dakota/Bishop Grandin, and the remainder of the south border is Novavista. The Seine River forms the eastern boundary.

The population in 2001 was 19,150. The average family income was $72,058, with an unemployment rate of 4.7 per cent. The main industry was health and social services (13.7%) followed by retail (12.1%).

2003 turnout: 61.15%

2003 NDP Christine Melnick defeated PC Shirley Render by 1,336 votes.
1999 NDP Linda Asper defeated David Newman by 274 votes.
1995 PC David Newman defeated LIB Gord Steeves by 441 votes.
1986 PC Gerry Ducharme defeated NDP Doreen Dodick by 769 votes. PC Ducharme was re-elected in 1988 and 1990.
1981 NDP Dodick defeated PC Craik by 242 votes.
1969 PC Donald Craik, first elected in St Vital in 1966, defeated NDP James Buchanan by 56 votes. He was re-elected in 1973 and 1977.
