Riding Profile:

This riding has existed since the election in 1870, the year Manitoba became a province. It has been PC since 1977. The riding is in southern Manitoba, with Lake Manitoba as the northern border. The Assiniboine River runs through the southern part of the riding. The City of Portage la Prairie is in the southern part of the riding. Other communities include Oakville, Newton and St. Marks.

The population in 2001 was 18,885. The average family income was $52,802 with an unemployment rate of 5.1 per cent. The major industry was health and social services (18%) followed by agriculture (12%).
